The Log was designed to capture many of the variables that are believed to determine fish activity on any given day. Each of the variables on the left side of the daily Logs are hyperlinked to the sources used to provide the data. Clicking on the variable Sunrise/Sunset for example will bring up the U.S. Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications Department's page entitled Complete Sun and Moon Data for One Day. These links can be used to obtain current information as well.
The information in the Log is also added to a database which is used to produce the monthly ,seasonal and yearly charts, graphs and summaries. As the database grows so will its usefullness. The expectation is to be able to post the results of query-based searches to determine, for example, the most favorable seasons for a particular species or the most productive areas of the pier etc.
One caution however - the Log is not an overall survey of angling on Goleta Pier. It reflects only those times and areas that I fished. But it is still indicative of the type of angling experience to be had there.
On the opening page of the Log there are several useful tools. The first is the chart Common Game Fish Availability adapted from a published source. The second is the Marine Fish Identification Chart provided by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG). It is helpful when there is a question of identity or a desire for further information about a particular species.
